Everyone always asks me, "what exactly does a therapist even do?"  You may even be asking yourself the same thing. My explanation is directly tied to why I chose this profession.....

A therapist to me, is a guide.  Someone that can give you a safe, judgement free, and professional space to work on past issues, current stressors, and everything in-between.  See, the really cool thing about a therapist is that we are objective!  If you wanted a mountain of advice, opinions, or half-hearted solutions, you'd go to your friends or family.  And although friends and family are awesome, working on yourself requires vulnerability, and who wants to do that with friends and family?  It is so encouraging to see the amount of progress someone can make when the fear of judgement is removed.

Plus, we all have layers!  Sometimes it takes another person to help us peel those layers away to discover our true self. I employ a strength-based approach to therapy with a hefty dose of directness, and a big scoop of humor (and the occasional profanity.) If you’re looking for someone who can call you on your crap and warmly guide you through it, I am your girl!

My specific interest is working with those in the perinatal time period of their life. This can be exploring the idea of children, trying to grow your family, infertility, pregnant or neonatal loss, perinatal depression or anxiety, postpartum recovery and transition, birth trauma, and overall transition to parenthood. Other areas of specific focus include relational boundaries, large life transitions, intimacy struggles, anxiety and depression, and career/life balance exploration. I pull from a variety of treatment modalities and also am trained in Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) as well as Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) for the treatment of trauma and/or OCD.

Asking for help is the first step in the journey and I would be honored to have the opportunity to travel with you on that path.

I hold a Master's in Education in Community Counseling from the College of William and Mary. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Virginia, a certified Perinatal Mental Health therapist through Postpartum Support International as well as a Certified Substance Abuse therapist through the state of Virginia.

In my free time I enjoy spending time with my family & friends, camping at various national and state parks, card making, being active, and staying highly involved in the community and my kids schools! Some of my joys include good Mexican food, Alani Nu on a tired day, a relaxing day by the creek, or a business lunch that includes Cava!

I look forward to working with you!

Therapy is collaborative, and we’ll work together to determine how I can best support you and the specific challenges you are experiencing. Together, we’ll explore your story, identify unhelpful themes and patterns, and find ways to help you find meaning and purpose in the midst of difficult experiences.

I am especially passionate about perinatal mental health and supporting mothers and couples through pregnancy, postpartum, transitions and adjustments, infertility, and grief and loss. My personal experience of becoming a mother during the pandemic while living in a foreign country informs my work, and I am sensitive to the unique challenges of motherhood and those experiencing multiple relocations and adjustments. I provide individual therapy for adults as well as marriage/couples counseling.

I believe true wellness must be holistic and purposeful, incorporating the physical, mental, social, emotional, and spiritual elements of being human. I also work from an attachment perspective, and believe healthy and strong relationships are central to wellbeing. Our work together may explore phase-of-life adjustments, relationships and attachment, social isolation/connection, narratives and your story, and the ways emotions and thoughts inform behavior, among others! Types of counseling theories I most often pull from are emotion-focused couples therapy, person-centered therapy, and elements of cognitive-behavioral therapy and narrative therapy.

I would be honored to walk with you on your journey!

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Virginia. I have advanced training in perinatal mental health (Postpartum Support International), emotionally-focused couples therapy (ICEEFT Therapist), and family counseling. Harleigh Humphries

Resident in Counseling

Main Focuses: Anxiety management, depression, improving communication and assertiveness, self-esteem/self confidence, improving relationship/marital relationships, stress management/burnout and life transitions, perfectionism, teen/college transitions.

To me, therapy is an incredibly unique and personalized experience. I’m a firm believer that therapy looks different for every person and there is no “one size fits all” approach. Everyone has a different story, a different experience, and a different lens in which they view the world from. From those stories and experiences is how you develop your belief system and responses to situations. Because you see things from your own point of view, I believe it’s important to have a therapist who will meet you where you’re at and work with you at your pace.

Taking the first step into therapy can be a scary and overwhelming process for anyone. Even if this isn't your first therapy rodeo, meeting with a new therapist can be daunting. I strive to create a space for you where you feel comfortable to express yourself as you work towards your own goals for therapy. Therapy can explore very vulnerable parts of ourselves and making sure you feel supported and validated is so important.

I see clients from all walks of life but my areas of focus are adolescents and adults who are working through anxiety and depression, stress, and relationship concerns. I am very passionate about couples work and enhancing relationships through improving communication and strengthening your connection.

Therapeutically, I like to sprinkle in techniques from multiple modalities to best meet your goals. This may look like using cognitive-behavioral techniques to explore the connection between our thoughts and behaviors while also paying attention to the strong importance of our emotions and how they affect our whole self. Your brain, your thoughts, your emotions, and your body all play a piece in how you experience and view the world and your relationships. I have completed Level 1 Training in Gottman Method Couples Therapy and utilize this approach while working with couples!

I hold a Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling from Northwestern University and am a Resident in Counseling in the state of Virginia under supervision with Danielle Cauley, LPC, PMHC.

Off the therapy couch, I’m an avid equestrian. I play polo and I love working with thoroughbred racehorses both on the racetrack and helping find them new careers once they retire from racing. When not riding, I can be found playing with my three dogs and baking a variety of sweet treats!

Harleigh is currently accepting new clients virtually, anywhere in the state of Virginia.

Alexis Kauffman

William & Mary Student Intern

Main Focuses: Teen/College aged struggles (academic stress, perfectionism), body image/self-confidence/disordered eating, perinatal mental health, women’s issues, anxiety/depression

I believe therapy is a collaborative and courageous journey. Whether this is your first time attending counseling or you’re returning to the process, taking the step to work with a therapist can feel daunting. Together, we will explore your experiences to identify areas where you may need support or desire change. I firmly believe that you are the expert in your own life—you hold the insight and strength needed to make meaningful changes. My role is to walk alongside you, offering guidance, support, and a fresh perspective as we move toward your goals. I am committed to creating a safe, welcoming space where all parts of you are seen, valued, and embraced.

I am passionate about supporting individuals across the lifespan. My areas of focus include working with individuals navigating perinatal mental health, self-esteem, body image concerns, and depression or anxiety. I also enjoy working with adolescent and college-age women as they manage friendship challenges, academic pressures, and self-esteem.

I am deeply committed to helping individuals strengthen their relationship with themselves through mindfulness, self-compassion, and gentle curiosity.

In my therapeutic work, I draw from a variety of modalities to create an approach tailored to your needs. This may include Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to build skills for managing intense emotions, parts work to better understand your internal world, and somatic practices to strengthen the mind-body connection.

I am currently a graduate student at the College of William & Mary pursuing a master’s in counseling degree and am completing my practicum under supervision of Danielle Cauley, LPC, PMHC.

Outside of the therapy room, I enjoy traveling to national parks, cooking, weightlifting, birdwatching, and attending Penn State football games (We Are!!).

I look forward to being your partner in wellness!

JOINING OUR TEAM SOON!

Main Focuses: Perinatal mental health, parenting stress, emotional regulation, anxiety, depression, relational struggles, self esteem, couples work, also working with adolescents & teens!

To me, counseling is one of the best gifts you can give yourself.  So many of us forget to carve out time for self-care, and counseling is a great way to jumpstart your journey towards empowerment and self-awareness, two essential ingredients for navigating life’s challenges.  As your therapist, I will make it my top priority to build a strong foundation of trust and acceptance and ensure you feel seen and heard.  Throughout our time together, I will help you discover your capabilities and motivate you to make changes that align with your values, thus inspiring you to take steps forward.

I am passionate about helping mothers and couples navigate the ups and downs of parenthood while remembering who they are as individuals and as a couple. Planning for a family comes with so many unexpected emotions, and it would be my privilege to support you during this momentous time.  Whether you are considering parenthood, trying to survive sleepless nights, or coping with grief and loss, I am here to walk along beside you with empathy and compassion.

In addition to the perinatal population, I also enjoy working with individuals and couples adjusting to different phases of life.  I believe in Emotion-Focused Therapy as it helps us understand how we interact with one another, what strengths we bring to our relationships but also where we ultimately get stuck.  EFT offers an experiential, bottom-up approach to counseling that can lead to greater insight and long-term genuine change.  Additionally, I am certified in Level I and II Gottman Method Couples Therapy, which offers an array of tools for healthy communication and fostering deeper connections.

May 2026, I will hold a master's degree in Relationships, Marriage and Family Counseling from William & Mary and will be a Resident in Counseling in the state of Virginia under supervision with Danielle Cauley, LPC, PMHC.  I have completed training through Postpartum Support International and am currently working on my Perinatal Mental Health certification.

Outside of counseling, I enjoy spending time with my family and two dogs, visiting old friends, volunteering at my kids’ school, and occasionally watching a good thunderstorm.  Over the years, I have realized that maintaining balance is essential for my personal well-being, and I am passionate about helping you find yours.

Sarah’s schedule is currently open and is scheduling new clients in-person in Williamsburg, or virtual anywhere in the state of Virginia beginning in mid May.

Kayla Mayer

JOINING OUR TEAM SOON!

Main Focuses: Teens or adults navigating trauma, chronic illness, anxiety, and other major life transitions and stressors. Perinatal & postpartum experiences, especially as it relates to chronic illness.

Sometimes the experiences we move through in life can leave us feeling disconnected from ourselves. This might come from past trauma that continues to resurface, chronic illness that shifts the life we once imagined, or seasons of anxiety, depression or transition that feel overwhelming or difficult to navigate alone.

Therapy with me is a space where you can show up as your full self. Whether you are feeling overwhelmed, anxious, numb, talkative, quiet, or unsure about where to begin. The relationship we build is important to me as I believe healing happens in spaces where you feel seen, supported and understood as a whole person, not just for what you are struggling with. Together, we will make sense of your experiences and move towards a life that feels more like your own.

I work with teens and adults navigating trauma, chronic illness, anxiety, depression, perinatal and postpartum experiences and other major life transitions. I hold a special place for those navigating chronic illness and for individuals beginning to notice how past experiences may be showing up in their present.

Living with chronic illness myself, I understand how heavy and unpredictable it can feel at times, and how it can impact the way that you move through life. For those navigating the impact of trauma, I create a space where we can explore your past experiences at your pace so you can begin to feel safe and reconnected to yourself. The past may not go away, but over time, it doesn’t have to feel as heavy or as present in your day to day life.

My approach integrates DBT, CBT, polyvagal theory and parts work. I like to blend practical tools with deeper understanding, helping you build skills while also exploring the “why” behind what you are feeling and experiencing, without it feeling overly clinical.

I hold a masters degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Walden University and am currently a Resident in Counseling practicing under the supervision of Danielle Cauley LPC, PMHC. I am also a Certified Trauma Professional and have advanced training in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT).

You don’t have to have it all figured out to begin, just a place to start. If you are feeling ready, I would be honored to walk alongside you.

Outside of the therapy room, I enjoy crocheting, hiking, lifting and attempting to bake gluten free treats (with mixed results).

Kayla’s schedule is currently open and is scheduling new clients in-person in Williamsburg, or virtual anywhere in the state of Virginia beginning end of May.
Please reach out now to inquire about securing an appointment!
